Industrial Design / On the Beach

Image
Paper mobile advertising the Second Southern California Student Industrial Design Conference. It was held in 1965 at the Blue Lagoon Villas in Laguna Beach.
The felt circles on the map marks the location.
Industrial Design students and instructors from USC, UCLA, Choinard, Art Center School, Stanford, Cal State San Jose and Cal State Long Beach were invited to attend. Casual clothing was suggested, including swimming trunks (I'm assuming that only trunks and no bathing suits = no ladies?).

Pottery / Books

Image
The Pasadena Convention Center was happening last weekend. The Los Angeles Pottery show and the California International Antiquarian Book Fair, all in one place. That's right, VIP at the book fair.
This booth was the show stopper...McIntosh, Pond Farm, Prieto, Natzler, Beato, Conover, Lukens...
Stacks of Harrison McIntosh pots.  They were all good ones too.
This was one of the two tables full of Claude Conover
Glen Lukens
Natzlers on the top and James Lovera on the bottom
There was some nice ephemera with this Lovera- it's a winner.
There were some great pots at other booths too, like this big Clyde Burt.
I'm not usually a Pillin fan, but this set of mini ones were kinda cool.

The book fair had some great things as well. Although, the amount of design related books was on the light side, the people watching made up for it. Apparently, book prints are the hot item to wear in this circle. I saw dealers wearing a dress, there was a vest and a I saw a couple of ties.  This…

JF Chen has the Girard settee that was designed by Girard for Braniff Airlines. This predates The Girard Group, which included a three seat version of this design.
This former Braniff airport lounge seat is the exact one that was pictured in  the ALEXANDER GIRARD book by Todd Oldham & Kiera Coffee

Ray Eames Exhibit / ESU

Image
ESU in theRay Eames: A Century of Modern Design exhibit at theCalifornia Museum.
The placard in front of it didn't really say anything specific about this ESU.  It was just a brief description of what an Eames Storage Unit is.  The construction doesn't look like a typical ESU.  For one, the feet are Domes of Silence and not the little black or gray rubber ones.
The plywood looks a little thick as well.
The panels are also wood, not Masonite.
Check out this wood brace to prevent the legs from bending.  It's like a mini-splint. Due to a tendency to bend, this leg design was actually changed to inset tubes in 1952. Anyway, I think this is one of the, if not the very first, ESUs from 1949.
This photo is from the 1949, An Exhibition for Modern Living. It looks like the same one to me. It's the same configuration, the top and side panels are the same and that white interior shelf is pretty unique.
