Mériadeck Architecture / Bordeaux

Image
When thinking of Bordeaux, futuristic modern architecture probably isn't the first thing to come to mind. Similar to the slum clearance movement that was happening in the United Staes in the 1960s,  Bordeaux city leaders, under a plan by city architect Jean Royer (not that Royer), began creating a series of high rise residential and commercial buildings in the working class neighborhood of Mériadeck. Although some building happened in the early 1960s, substantial construction under a modified plan by Royer did not start until the 1970s.

There is a network of pedestrian bridges over the streets connecting the buildings. This modernist scheme turned out to be a great way to effectively kill street vitality.  Compared to almost everywhere else I visited in Bordeaux, Mériadeck is dead.

Mick Ruis, a developer, agreed to sell the 5,000-square-foot building for $1.7 million, $100,000 more than what he bought it for. He made this offer after preservationists heard of the demolition plans. Ruis ultimately rejected the offer from an LLC set up by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy. This was despite receiving his asking price of $1.7 million and a deposit. He kept changing his terms and demanded a deposit that was 50% higher, and non-refundable. He also changed his deadline multi…

In 1949, Frank Lloyd Wright was Commissioned by the Southwest Christian Seminary to build a University on 8 acres in Phoenix, AZ. The design was complete and made public in 1950, but the bible college shut down and the project never started. Wright died in 1959, but his widow allowed the plans to be used for the First Christian Church. It was completed in 1972. The bell tower was built in 1978.

Three paintings by Oskar Fischinger Coincidentally, Oskar worked as motion picture cartoon effects animator at Disney right around the same time KEM Weber designed the new offices. Theoretically, he could have been using a Weber desk when he was working on Fantasia. Fischinger at work at the Disney studio in 1939. He hated it. More on that, here.

Salvador Dali was around the Disney studio too. There is an "Airline" chair in the corner.
