Downtown Modernism / LA

Image
Modernica hosted another great Downtown Modernism vintage flea market this past weekend.
The event was held at the Modernica factory and warehouse in Downtown Los Angeles.   Source: Downtown Modernism
This Spanish Colonial Revival building can be seen in the vintage rendering above. There are some great original buildings on the site.
They really do this event right, including the good food trucks.
Then there were just some good trucks.
Eames and Grossman at The Modern Era booth
Vivika and Otto Hieno at the Michael Hickman booth
The Ten10 booth was dedicated to Saving the Fulton Mall.  Through the generosity of Stan Bitters and Ten10, the proceeds from the sale of all these works by Stan are being donated to efforts to stop the demolition of the historic Fulton Mall in Fresno. I got my shirt.
Towards the end of the day, the booth was looking thin.  A good chuck of change was raised. You can do your part by donatinghere.
More information on the ridiculous plan to demolish the Fulton Mall can be f…

Scripps Collection / The American Museum of Ceramic Art

Best Kept Secret: The Scripps College Ceramic Collection at The American Museum of Ceramic Art The Scripps Collection is legendary. It was almost singlehandedly complied by Fred Marer,  a math professor at Los Angeles City College. He amassed the collection with modest means, mostly through buying the pieces directly from the artists. The exhibition includes over 180 examples, and all are amazing. The exhibition only lasts 10 more days, so I encourage you to do whatever it takes to go see it. I've seen a lot of good pots, but this exhibition is legendary.   There is an enormous wall of 39 plates

LA / Pottery Show

Image
This weekend was the Los Angles Pottery Show
A bulk of the show is this kind of pottery. Besides maybe some Catalina tile I can't tell you what any of this stuff is.
I can tell you this is a mammoth Raul Coronel. This was in my friend Michael Hickman's booth. He is one of the four or so dealers  at the show who specializes in modern studio ceramics.  He also throws a good pot himself. I wish I would have taken a photo of one of his pieces.
He also had this really cool Michael Frimkess piece.
A monster Frank Matranga lamp, also at Hickman's booth.
Frank had a booth at the show with his newer work.
A really good Myrton Purkiss plate
Who knew Harrison McIntosh did glass? A very limited number were done by Mikasa for a fundraiser. I knew about the dishes for Mikasa, but glass? Those lines are classic McIntosh. It's hand-signed.
Marg Loring lamp. I really like that.
Look what I found... Doyle Lane weed vases. They look good on my dashboard too.
I also picked up this sweet little Vivika…
