LA Antiques Show

Image
Gerald McCabe, Paul Tuttle and some great ceramics in the Reform Gallery booth at the Los Angeles Antiques Show.  There was some good music coming out the JBLs in that McCabe stereo on the back wall. The Gordon Onslow-Ford and Lee Mulican on the side wall were good to see.
John Altoon painting, Vivika and Otto Heino pottery, Gerald McCabe cube tables and dining set,  Evelyn Ackerman textilesand Design Line lamps / Reform Gallery booth. Look at those huge Heino bowls!

Another reality show filming at the Rose Bowl flea.  There's at least one film crew there every month now. I wonder if any of it actually gets on the air? I heard this one is a Storage Wars spin off.

Spring Sale / Eames

Image
JF Chen held a spring sale this weekend with the likes of Galerie Half, Eccola, Lee Stanton and The Melrose Project
There were a few remnants of the Collecting Eames exhibit still in the space, including this super rare wall hung sofa that was designed for the IBM Pavillion at the 1964 New York World's Fair. No sale tag on this one.
No markdown tag on the Eames-designed kiosk for the IBM Pavilion either.

Watch a Daniel Ostroff video about the kiosk here.

Eames + Valastro

Image
Eames + Valastro by Daniel Ostroff  Most collectors, including me, get caught up in the minutia of screws, labels and unusual base configurations.  Eames + Valastro looks at Eames furniture in the context of what it was designed for-- to be lived with.

Sal and Gladys Valastro were married on Valentine's day, 1954 (58 years ago today). Shortly after, they used money they received as wedding gifts to purchase a houseful of Eames furniture. Photo: danielostroff.com
Sal and Gladys lived and lovingly used their nine Eames pieces for over 50 years. The ESU 400 was $100 in 1954. That's about $800 in 2012 dollars.  One sold at Wright last year for $9K.  Photo: Eames + Valastro
The red CTM was a popular ride at the Valastro house.   The rocker was also turned upside down and used as a turtle shell for the kid underneath.   Photo: Eames + Valastro
The green felt is on this RAR is awesome. It attests to the notion of the owner being involved in the continuation of the design process.   The Valastro +…

Rocker- RXR / RAR

Image
One of the more intriguing chairs in the JF Chen Eames Collection  is this Zenith rope edge "RXR" chair.  Image Source: Eames Designs
The rocker base seems to be somewhat of a mystery. The idea is that it's some sort of pre-production rocker base prototype.
The facts:  Produced by Zenith, so that dates it at, or after, 1950  Labeled DAX, with wood (looks like stained ash) runners attached. I saw it up close and the screws have screwdriver marks. The runners, base and shell seem to be in mint condition
In 1948 MoMA held an "International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design"
Eames Office teamed up with the UCLA School of Engineering and produced these designs.
The Eames designs tied for second place in the competition.

Collecting Eames: The JF Chen Collection

Image
These are some awful cell phone photos from the opening of the Collecting  Eames gallery show at JF Chen.  The show is part of Pacific Standard Time. The depth of this collection and the execution of the display is astonishing. Since this is a gallery show, most of these items are for sale!

There was some serious Eames nerding off going on.  Banners of the bottom of chairs were hung throughout the space. This was a nice touch that  shows the academic approach of the display.  There were at least a few discussions going on about original screws and feet.
The chairs were organized chronologically,  starting with the 1939 Eames and Saarinen Kleinhans chair.
