Sometimes the findings are slim, so this weekend my big score was a  Srtuck by Modernism C.Carl Jennings California Artist-Blacksmith T-shirt from the Mingei exhibition.
On a related note, this Friday exhibition curator Dave Hampton will be giving a lunchtime lecture on Jennings.  Details can be found, here.

C. CARL JENNINGS, CALIFORNIA ARTIST-BLACKSMITH Guest-curated by Dave Hampton. Opens today. The Mingei and Hampton really outdid themselves on this one.
I'm just throwing out a couple teaser shots.  The exhibition has a ton of insane work by Jennings.  Darren Bradley took the photos of the Jennings house that are on display in the exhibition.
I bet you never knew blacksmithing could be so cool.
The exhibition catalog, Struck by Modernism C.Carl Jennings California Artist-Blacksmith,  was writtenby Dave Hampton

Craftsmen / Menagerie

Image
Allied Craftsmen Today at the Mingei The Allied Craftsmen of San Diego have been around in one form or other since the 1940s. This exhibition is sort of an  update to the Mingei's 2011 San Diego's Craft Revolution, which was curated by Dave Hampton. Beginning with  work by a group of artists who were also in Craft Revolution, the exhibit also includes contemporary members of  The Allied Craftsmen. All the work has been created within the last two years.

Crafting the Revolution / Hampton

Image
Dave Hampton at the Mingei discussing how it all came together. Erik Gronborg ceramics are up on the screen.  Erik was also in the audience. If you weren't there, you missed a good talk.
If you haven't seen the exhibit yet, you better go now. San Diego's Craft Revolution closes April 15th
You've already missed out on some great pieces in the theater gallery. This Jack Boyd ceramic plaque will be coming down tomorrow. It's going back to the Boomerang for Modern private stash.
The wall of ephemera is outs too.
You still have some time to see the rest. Don't blow it.

Close outSan Diego’s Craft Revolutionwith an insider’s look at how it all came together. By focusing on members of the Allied Craftsman group, this exhibition explores San Diego craft from 1940s modernism to the funk and post-modernism of the 1970s. Learn how curator Dave Hampton’s ten years of research informed this exhibition, and how the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time collaboration has created new interest in this often overlooked period of San Diego’s art history.

Hydrodynamica / Everything Connects

The exhibition focuses on surfboard pioneers Bob Simmons and Carl Ekstrom and the technology used   to develop the modern day surfboard.

Eames chairs, Eames quotes and surfboards.   The idea is that surfboard building and post-war modern California design were on similar paths.

Carl Ekstrom boards
Svetozar Radakovich, in collaboration with Carl Ekstrom, did these foam, fiberglass, wood and resin doors. They were shown in California Design 10 and now they're at the Mingei.
Dave Hampton breaks it down better than i ever could:
Surfing and the craft of shaping surfboards began to exert an influence on San Diego's design culture in the 1960s, when  local surfers like Douglas Deeds and Carl Ekstrom started using polyurethane foam, fiberglass and resin to create smooth,  seamless chairs, tables and doors as well as a variety of products for water sports and the beach lifestyle. Deeds'  inventive designs for furniture ma…
