The Doyle Lane Summit happened this past Saturday at The Landing / Reform Gallery. It featured a panel discussion and book release for the exhibition,Doyle Lane: Clay Paintings  The star of the show, the Mutual Savings and Loan mural, accompanied by felt chairs by Tanya Aguiniga and Eames in the audience.
It was a packed house.  A lot of hands raised when it was asked who owned a piece by Lane.
Seated, left to right: Jill Moniz- Former curator at California African American Museum, Gerard O'Brien- Owner of Reform, Rudy Estrada- Close friend of Doyle's; and Ben Sarar- another close friend and the photographer whose images captured a rare look at Doyle in his element, creating art.The curator, the dealer, the friend/patron and the friend/photographer each shared their perspectives on Lane. The topics ranged from art, friendship, race, religion, sexuality and even toxic Superfund sites. Here, Rudy is recounting how Doyle would give him and the other neighborhood kids weeds pots when…

ELIZABETH MCCORD: SOFT COLOR
The Landing at Reform
OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH TH, 7-9:30 PM
ON DISPLAY: FEBRUARY 6TH-APRIL 5TH Elizabeth McCord (1914-2008) was a California Modernist painter best known for her 1940s, 50s and 60s canvases. Her work Big Pink was the only painting chosen to appear in LACMA's sweeping 2011 survey of mid-century California design, Living in a Modern Way.If you're in LA tonight, you should definitely get out of the house and go to this opening at Reform and the Grapevine book signing. Go get your Grapevine book signed at 6pm and then head over to Reform. They're less than 5 miles apart. Elizabeth McCord painting hanging in June Wayne's house, which was deigned by Alvin Lustig. FYI- Contrary to what this dealeris saying, these lamps were not deigned by Lustig. Update: The dealer is now saying the lamps are byHarry Lawenda. I wonder if they have any documentation on that?

LA / Art

Calder and Abstraction, at LACMA No photos allowed, and there were plenty of guards making sure of it.  Trust me, you need to go see this exhibit.
James Turrell: A Retrospective, also at LACMA
James Turrell, "Breathing Light" is an 8 minute walk-in environment with a constantly changing spectrum of lights.
Art that you have to take your shoes off for is the best.
Turrell and Eames
Along with the light pieces are several exhibits that deal with larger scale works, like the Roden Crater Project and other site-specific works.  There's a lot of ephemera too. I wish I was on the ball and was able get a spot to see Perceptual Cell and Dark Matters before they sold out.
If you haven't already been, don't forget to go to TANYA AGUIÑIGA: FIBER ELEMENTS at Reform She'll be at LACMA soon too. Wanna bet?

TANYA AGUIÑIGA: FIBER ELEMENTS

OPENING RECEPTION:THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5 TH, 7-9:30 PM ON DISPLAY: DECEMBER 5TH -FEBRUARY 1ST
"If Beatrice Wood was the Mama of Dada, then Tanya Aguiñiga surely  qualifies as the patron saint of theLos Angeles modern craft movement."
LA Times Tanya has a long list of accolades to back this statement up. She's been on the cover ofAmerica Craft magazine. The prestigious Crafit in Americafilmed a segment on her. CAFAM (Craft and Folk Art Museum) had an exhibition of her work in 2011. It really goes on and on. The people who know craft and design -- like the aforementioned list, Gerard O'Brien from Reform (a longtime supporter), institutions, major collectors and me (way lower on the totem pole of anyone listed) -- know Tanya is amazing. I even sleep with one of her sculptures hanging over my bed (one of the few things I own that was made after the 60's).  Anyway, this show is going to be great and I'm sure the opening…
