The Bailey Residence / Kendrick Bangs Kellogg

The Bailey Residence by Kendrick Bangs Kellogg (1983-1989)  Dave Hampton took Dung Ngo and I on a Kellogg outing this week. The first stop was in the northern tip of San Diego County to visit a project on a 40 acre avocado ranch in Valley Center, CA After seeing Kellogg speak at a lecture in Balboa Park, Joe and Barbara Bailey asked him to design a "simple house" for their hilltop property. Kellogg responded with the design we see today.  The Baileys managed and took part in much of the construction. This labor of love started in 1984 and took 6 years to build. It is still owned by the Bailey family. John Vugrin did the door. The kitchen skylight One of the downstairs bedrooms. Ranch workers used rocks from the site to do all of the masonry work. More about the house and short-term rentals and photo shoots can be found on their website:  https://www.baileykelloggresidence.com/about

Hoshino Chapel or Uchimura Kanzo Memorial Stone Church in Karuizawa, Japan by San Diego architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg (1988).  I went to Japan for a couple weeks. This is my first report back. Source:   Stone Church It's a very popular wedding venue. Some tout it as the "most popular" in Japan.  A fter a three hour Shinkansen train journey from Tokyo, I almost didn't get to s...

Doolittle / Kendrick Bangs Kellogg

High Desert House (1993) by Kendrick Bangs Kellogg I did a post about the house in 2014 but as far I was able to get was the front gate.  This time I was able to get inside. The property abuts the Joshua Tree National Park. The front door. John Vugrin is responsible for the interior work. It's unclear how much of the furnishings were spec'd by Kellogg versus what was built in the decades after the initial house construction. Every detail is custom and incredible.
