Tucson / Modernism

Image
Tucson Modernism Week 2019, presented by the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation  was held this past weekend. A small group of San Diegans ventured out to join the fun. The firs stop, as it usually is when I go to Tucson, was the Sunshine Shop . It is located in the historic Hirsh's building, where the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation is also located. Sunshine often holds exhibitions related to Arizona artists and craftspeople. Leona Caldwell, from the Family Archives, was the focus of their modernism week exhibition. Leona Caldwell was a noted figure in Arizona’s modernist craft movement. Based in Scottsdale, her work celebrated cultural themes and graphics of the southwest. Leona Caldwell Originals, her retail shop, was opened in the respected Kiva Craft Center on Fifth Avenue in Scottsdale. Leona Caldwell became a central figure in the Scottsdale modern craft movement - which included Lloyd Kiva, Charles Loloma, Paolo Soleri, and many others. Sh...

It also includes a great article on Doyle Lane, so I'm deeming this  the weed pot issue.  Cabat turned 100 on June 27th! Celebrating 100 Years: Rose Cabat by Bruce Block The Incomparable Doyle Lane by Linda and James Haggerty The publication is only available to members of the American Art Pottery Association .   New members get all the back issues for the entire year, so it's a good deal to sign up. As an alternative , it will be available on the back issues section of the AAPA website  i n a few months. Update: You can email Linda at the AAPA to get a copy now:  Lindalscarrigan@aol.com .

Scripps Collection / The American Museum of Ceramic Art

Image
Best Kept Secret: The Scripps College Ceramic Collection at  The American Museum of Ceramic Art   The Scripps Collection is legendary. It was almost singlehandedly complied by Fred Marer,  a math professor at Los Angeles City College. He amassed the collection with modest means, mostly through buying the pieces directly from the artists. The exhibition includes over 180 examples, and all are amazing. The exhibition only lasts 10 more days, so I encourage you to do whatever it takes to go see it. I've seen a lot of good pots, but this exhibition is legendary.   There is an enormous wall of 39 plates Michael Frimkess Paul Soldner - "Throwing Naked" - 1966 Fumio Tagasugi Jun Kaneko Peter Voulkos - One of many in the exhibition Stacked Voulkos Monster Voulkos Little Voulkos Bird Voulkos Walking Voulkos Jun Kaneko Robert Arneson Henry Takemoto Another great Takemoto One mor...
