 Back to my trip to New York. It was a short one, so I was only able to go to two shops.  Being a longtime fan of Weinberg Modern , I'm so glad I was able to visit the showroom in Tribeca. Larry has been in the business since the early 1990's, He's been dedicated to an academic approach that involves the rediscovery of some of the more obscure designers from the late late 1940s and 1950s. Farnsworth Skalar Modern Weinberg Modern It's good to see some old school Douglas Fir DIY modern on 1stdibs. The lack of the usual grasping for designer names through attributions is also refreshing.  Some things are just great no matter who made them. In the manner of honest design.

Lila  Swift Monell and Donald  F.  Monell enamel top table Donald, from Concord MA., attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, earning degrees in engineering and  construction (1940),  city planning (1941), and later a master's degree in architecture. He was as a lieutenant in the  U.S. Army Engineers.   His regiment landed on Utah Beach in the Normandy invasion of 1944, and prepared the  bombed  port of Cherbourg  for allied shipping. Donald and Lila married in 1951.  Donald  worked as city planner for the Tennessee  Valley Authority,   with his wife Lila at their company, Swift and Monell, and later opened his own  office in  Gloucester, MA., in 1952.  Donald passed away in 2002.  Lila Swift Monell was from Pasadena, CA.  She operated a sanctuary for injured birds in  Gloucester  and  even wrote a poetry book in 2004.   Image: Zig...
