De Pree House / Eames
Max and Esther De Pree House (1954) by Charles Eames in Zeeland, Michigan Max De Pree, the son of D. J. De Pree, and future chairman of Herman Miller, told Charles Eames he wanted a house like the "Eames House" (Case Study House 8). Charles and the Eames Office designed a wood house that would survive the Michigan winters. Per Max's direction, the house was built by local craftsmen. The garage is on the left and the matching study on the right was added later. The De Pree family lived in the house until 1975. It's now owned by Herman Miller. Herman Miller timeline at their distribution center in Holland, Michigan. It was the first stop on a great tour of their facility and archives. Eames Alley There was so much great stuff to see in the archives. This is the 1955 blueprint of the Eames 670 and 671. It shows a few updates to the design, including a change to the ottoman glides. Jean Balmer, 1960s In the Abstract Curated by Dave Hampton As a starting point, In the Abstract recognizes the commitment of regional modernist pioneers such as painters Fred Hocks and Ed Garman, experimental photographer Lynn Fayman, and Harry Bertoia, the renowned sculptor, printmaker, and designer. Following these frontrunners, the exhibition pays special attention to a wave of youthful artists who came to regional prominence during the late 1950s and were, at least for a time, profoundly influenced by Abstract Expressionism.
