Julius Shulman / Modern San Diego

Keith York at Modern San Diego curated two exhibitions of Julius Shulman's work in San Diego.  First up is Julius Shulman: Modern La Jolla at The La Jolla Historical Society . The exhibition will be on view until January 19, 2020 The La Jolla Federal Savings and Loans Association (1962) The lighting fixtures used on the building were designed by Malcolm Leland. Thereafter the exhibition will be on view between September 28, 2019 - January 19, 2020.   Recognized for his work in Los Angeles and Palm Springs, it is not widely known that between 1934 and 2007, architectural photographer Julius Shulman (1910 - 2009) shot over 200 projects in San Diego.  His clients were architects, publishers, construction companies, and developers, and included notable San Diego architects Lloyd Ruocco, Sim Bruce Richards, Henry Hester, and Frederick Liebhardt. Cree House / Albert Frey

In 1947, Raymond Cree, a school superintendent who went into real estate development, hired Albert Frey to design a hotel on 12 acres Cree owned on East Palm Canyon Drive. The hotel never materialized, but in 1955 Frey designed Cree a 1,300-square-foot house on the hillside property. The exterior of the house is asbestos cement board that has painted vertical lines. Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles    And here is the  Gerald McCabe sofa Pierre Koenig specified for the house. This is the one  Koenig had McCabe produce in 1998, when  Pierre  was restoring the house. The original was damaged at some point. It is now part of the massive inventory at Modernica Props . The 65,000 square ft. prop house is located in the former Dolly Madison Bakery in Silverlake.
